Clair Standish is a young teenager who attends Shermer high, in Shermer Illinois, America. Clair is popular in high school and values her popularity and people usually define her as the “princess”. At the start of the movie before the detention she said to the principal “excuse me sir but I don’t think I belong in here.” She lives with her parent’s and her father is very wealthy. She dresses in expensive clothing and wears a pair of diamond earrings. We see her and her father in their BMW car, she says, “I cant believe you cant get me out of this, I mean its so absurd I have to be here on a Saturday…its not like its effective or anything.”
She is annoyed she has to spend her Saturday in detention, and her attitude seems arrogant. All the students are different from each other and none of them talk at school so they don’t all get along that easy but after opening up to each other we soon realise that Clair isn’t all that perfect.
We know that Clair is the popular one, the other students in detention think she lives a easy life, her father is wealthy, she gets whatever she wants and doesn’t have to work for it and has lots of friends but we find out that that’s not the case, she doesn’t live a easy life despite everything she has, we find out that her parents are always arguing and she takes it personally on herself. She’s shy when it comes to revealing her personal life. When the students come together at the end and start to talk about their personal life, Clair gets defensive and feels embarrassed to admit to the others she’s still a virgin. She also says “I’m so sick of having to listen and go along with what her friends always say”. We see a loyal side to Clair when she gives the “basket case” Alison a makeover.
Clair initially appears to be a confident student however as the film develops we see that she has the same fears and confusions as everybody else. She learns to accept responsibility for her actions despite initially being angry that she couldn’t get out of detention with her fathers help.
