Representations - Misfits & Issues Related to Parents
The breakfast club represents the Misfits those who are considered different and don’t fit in. This representation is mainly portrayed by three of the characters; Brian, Allison and Bender, the brain, the basket case and the criminal, the social outcasts. Both Clare and Andrew can’t necessarily be considered as misfits, they both are popular, well liked and fit into a certain social group.
Brian is a nerd who has absolutely no social life, purely upon the basis that his parents force him to study all the time, which results in him having very bad social skills and being an introverted person. Allison the basket case keeps to her self and is happy to, at the start of the movie she sits as far away as possible form all of the others, she doesn’t interact with any one and no one seems to know anything about he. She too like Brian seems to have no apparent friends and an introvert, who is satisfied with her own company. Bender “the criminal” is a social outcast for a whole different reason, he rebels against what people consider acceptable, he doesn’t abide by the rules or care what people say or think about him. He likes to draw attention to him self to make up for the lack of attention given to him at home. He too like Allison and Brian appear to not have any friends but none seem to be overly bothered.
Each character represents a different issue or problem, which in one way or another related to of due because of their parents.
Brian who contemplated committing suicide when he receives his first mark that wasn’t an “A”, this just emphasises the immense pressure that was placed on him from his parents to do well. The amount of studying his parents made him do also affected his social life and skills.
Andrew Clark “the athlete” who was put in detention for taping some ones bum cheeks together in the locker roo, this was due to his father always reminding him of the crazy things that he did in high school. His father always reminding him made him feel as if he had to be accepted and respected by his father.
Clare Standish “the princess” problems are more superficial then the rest of the characters, her issues involve having to worry what people think about her and what she looks like and having to look good all the time. At home Clare is ignored and treated as if she is an object by her parents who believe her love can be bought through money and clothes.
John Bender otherwise known as “the criminal” is desperate fro attention at school to make up for never getting any at home. To receive attention he acts out and rebels he also challenges authority figures and dominate males for example Mr Veron, he challenges to feel powerful. He relates Mr Veron to his father whom he has a very difficult relationship with. The only attention Bender receives at home is when his father physically abuses him.
Allison Reynolds “the basket case” doesn’t talk to anyone until mid-movie, before then the only communication she made was through noises. Allison’s parents ignore her at home; they pay no attention to her, which is obvious to the viewer when they drop her off at school, before she can say good-bye they drive straight off. Allison keeps her to her self and doesn’t converse with other people.
